Nepean’s new laser tracker ‘made to measure’ for Aviation, Defence and Automotive industries
Tuesday, 31 March 2009

One of the world’s most advanced laser tracker systems, used extensively in the international aviation and aerospace industries, has now been commissioned by leading Australian machinery engineering company, Nepean Engineering.

Nepean’s new Leica AT 901 B Laser tracker provides a fast, precise service to resolve unexplained deviations that often occur in the manufacturing process, resulting in production downtime and recurring non-conformances.

It can also be used for positioning machines, fixtures or jigs, installing and aligning machine tools, roll mills, presses or gantry-based machines.

Operating solely with a reflector, it is optimised for inspections within a measurement volume of up to 160 m.

“We have purposely commissioned this new laser tracker to meet the complex and technically demanding requirements of the Australian defence and aviation industries,” says Nepean’s Senior Mechanical Engineer Predrag Petrovic .

“It is operated by a technician with many years of laser tracker experience. We can under- take work for clients at our Narellan facility in south-west Sydney, or we can provide both the machine and the highly skilled operator on-site at the client’s facility on a fee-for- service basis.

“Our services include alignment and inspection of fixtures, machined parts and assem- blies, verification of manufacturing processes, reverse engineering of solid master parts into CAD models, bore and shaft alignment, and other tasks demanding highly accurate 3- D measurement.”
